West Melton Soldier Has the Spirit of Adventure

Nineteen-Years-Old Peter Hardwick is a young man with a spirit of adventure.

On a nine years engagement in the Army, he recently took part in lines laid down by the War Office, on a training scheme in Cyprus, aimed at encouraging initiative, ingenuity and resolve.

The scheme was a 30-miles week-end trek when a team from the 29th Signal Regiment were armed only with a blanket, water bottle and rations.

Peter is the son of Mr. and Mrs, Hubert Hardwick, of 3, Packman Road, West Melton, and Mrs. Hardwick said this week that her son went to Cyprus in January. She was recently told that he would return home in March to take up duties at Tunbridge Wells.

Letter from York

“All I know about this recent adventure is contained in a letter I received from the Northern Command headquarters at York,” she said, “I expect he didn’t want to worry me.”

Before joining the Army, Peter was a four-man with Mr John Brooks, of Highfield Farm, West Melton for two years. Mr Hardy tried to stop Peter from signing on.

“But you know what lads are,” he said.
