Sad Note for Local Music

Perhaps one of the best-known husband-and-wife musical teams in the Wath, West Melton and Mexborough areas, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Stanger, are to retire from the local musical scene. Mr. and Mrs Stanger of 19, Boswell Road, Wath, will shortly be moving to Holmpton, near Withernsea.

Mr. Stanger has, apart from a short break been organist and choir master at West Melton Congregational Church for 50 years and accompanist for most of the choirs for his wife has been the conductor, since Mrs. Stanger first began to take her music seriously 25 years ago, when she gained her L.R.A.M. and A.R.C.M.

Mrs. Stanger was for a long time a teacher of elocution and singing and was responsible for the formation and conductorship of the one-time well-known Wath Co-operative Girls’ Choir and has, for many years been the conductor of the Oaklea Retreat, Cortonwood and Mexborough Choirs run in conjunction with Rockingham College of Further Education.

Our photograph shows Miss E. Jackson (left) presenting a salad bowl on behalf of the Oaklea and Mexborough Choirs, as a token of their appreciation.  Looking on (right) is Mrs. H. Stephens.
