Cycling at Eighty!
One of Harlington’s keenest cyclists – that’s William Webster, who cycles just about everywhere he goes…and he will be 80 in September!
A miner for 55 years at Hickleton, Highgate, Goldthorpe and Manvers pits, Mr. Webster, who is retired, has always been keenly interested in cycling and his interest now is as strong as ever.
Mr. Webster of Manor Road, Harlington, says: “I do not know what I would do without my bike.” His weekly runs include trips to see his two brothers at Bolton (where he was born), and rides to Goldthorpe and Barnburgh. He also travels the short distance to the Harlington Inn by cycle and to his allotment which is behind the Inn.
Cycling is not Bill’s only hobby; he is a keen gardener and also enjoys walking. He remembers when he used to work at Hickleton Main Colliery in 1904. “In those days I lived at Bolton, when we were on days, we all would meet at 4.30 in the morning outside the Collingwood, then we would walk the two miles to work, and think nothing of it.”
Still as fit as a man of 30, Bill will be cycling for a long time yet.
