Hargreaves’ Fine Bowling
Knaresboro’ Batsmen Bewildered
Wath Athletic 110 Knaresboro’ 25
G Feirn 34; Calvert 6-50 T Hargreaves 8-12
Wath Athletic won decisively in their opening Council game when new opponents Knaresboro’’ provided the opposition. The visitors will certainly remember their visit as they had to race the clock to Wath and the game was started half an hour late.
Wath took first innings but their progress was only steady. Calvert commanded respect and he was responsible for the fall of the first four wickets while Beaumont clean bowled Goodall to dismiss half the side for 36. A stand by Jewsbury and L. Cutts brought on Roberts who bowled the former at 50. A splendid partnership by Cutts and Feirn greatly improved the position, Cutts playing his usual steady innings with Feirn and a little more enterprising. The slowness of the outfield was clearly shown when one mighty hit from Feirn dropped dead. When 53 had been added, Feirn was bowled by Calvert for 34. Cutts did not survive long, also falling victim to Calvert who took 6 wickets in all for 50, and the innings closed for 110. Robert also bowled well taking 3 for 19.
In response, the Knaresboro’ batsmen fared very badly their innings being practically a procession through their inability to deal with Hargreaves and Pearce. In their innings of 25, extras took place of honour with 7. The Wath captain took the bowling honours with 8 for 12. Pearce, who had 2 for 6, had four maiden overs in the seven he sent down. Perhaps the most interesting part in the innings was the regularity with which the wickets fell, two at 6, two at 13, two at 21 and three at 25.
