Montagu Cup Final
Manvers Main 4, Upton Colliery 3
For the third year in succession Manvers Main have placed the trophy on their “sideboard.’ The final was played on Denaby United’s ground. The “gate, which rather disappointing, realised just over £23, and the ground percentage due to Denaby was handed back to the competition as a donation.
The game was rather disappointing and lacked the usual cup-tie excitement. Both Manvers and Upton missed a penalty early in the first half, and those failures seemed to take all the interest out. Sherborne, Upton’s left full back was injured, and was little use for the rest of the game.
When the interval arrived Manvers led 1-0, the goal being scored by COCKER at outside right. Upton had another set-back when CHAMBERS, their hard working left-halt, put through his own goal to give Manvers their second goal. Taking advantage of this error Manvers applied full pressure and soon COCKER added two more. With such arrears facing them Upton suddenly recovered, and it came as no surprise to see HARPER and FOWLER adding a goal each.
The cup was presented to the Manvers captain (Matt. Morallee), by Mr. W. P. Turner, President of the Montagu Hospital, who said that the Manvers success established a record for the competition. which had been in existence for 30 years, but no club had previously won It three years in succession.
