Mexborough’s Strange Fate

Mexborough sustained a heavy defeat in their Midland League match at Hillsborough, on Saturday, when The Wednesday Reserves beat them 6-1, five of the goals being scored in the last 25 minutes.

It is not often Mexborough defence capitulates so often in a match. The Wednesday ought to have put the result beyond doubt much sooner, but Mexborough’s vigorous tactics upset them to a great extent. The Wednesday defenders had an easy afternoon, while Williams, in the visitors’ goal, was very busy. Trotter scored for Wednesday after about thirty minutes’ play, and Mexborough equalised practically straight from the kick-off, through Parry. In the second half the visitors were completely outplayed and goals for the home men were scored by Lowdell. Petrie (2), Dickenson, and Matthewson. Kemp, a local junior on trial at outside-left, played a useful game, while Roberts and Glover defended well for the visitors and Armitage was a very dangerous forward.

The feature of the match between Lincoln City Reserves and Denaby, at Lincoln, was the stout defensive work of both sides, and the result 1 – 1 was a fairly true reflex of the game, although the visiting forwards were some time before they got into their stride. Bretnall led the Denaby attack well against his old club, and twice very nearly scored with solo efforts. Dalglish from Glasgow to whom Lincoln ere giving a trial, was in the second half removed from the centre-forward to the left-half berth.

Both goals were scored in the first half, Morton for the City and Kennedy for Denaby being the successful marksmen.

Before 3000 spectators, Wath Athletic were beaten at Mansfield by 2 – 0, Greatorex scoring a goal in each half.

Topham in the Wath goal, gave a great display in the second half, effectively dealing with a number of excellent shots. But for his cleverness Wath would have been more heavily defeated.

After an absence of 6 weeks, it was only reasonable to expect that there would be a good attendance and Scunthorpe United were again at home, but on Saturday the reverse was the result, and not more than 2,000 were present.

Apart from the poor finishing of the forwards little fault could be found with the team’s display in the first half, but after this play was good and bad in patches and with the exception of walking, thrice maintaining says, the others seem to play with little spirit.

The goals were scored by Gittos, Maycock and Rushby. There were several minor accidents; Lloyd was off for five minutes in the second half with a damaged leg, and just on time Whitham fell heavily on his head was laid off suffering from slight concussion.

Wogin, Betts and Hill were Scunthorpe’s best defence, and Maycock and Meredith the pick of the forwards. Drew, Ward and Bramley rendered good service for Wombwell.
