Red Cross collections in the Dearne District for July totalled £186/7/3.

“October in the Straits” states a recent newspaper heading, that may be true, but the weather certainly hasn’t improved much anywhere else. – Punch.

Many Civil Defence workers have gone from Yorkshire to help meet the new form of enemy attack against London and the Southern counties, and an appeal is being made to Yorkshire folk for money to provide comforts for all those men and women from all parts of the country now engaged in the Battle of the South.

Dr. Victor Hoskin, Director of Education for Ilford since 1938, has been appointed Chief Education Officer for Doncaster, in succession to Mr. Victor Clark who had been appointed Education Officer to the West Riding.  Dr. Hoskin attended Mexborough Secondary School and gained a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from Sheffield University. His wife is the elder daughter of Mr. J. W. Tomlinson, principal of Whiteley’s Business College , Sheffield.  As a young man he was a Methodist lay preacher in Rotherham.

September 16th has been provisionally fixed for the presentation to Mr. J. A. Hall, J. P., President of the Y.M.A., of his portrait in oils and other gifts, together with the unveiling of a bust of Mr. Hall in appreciation of his zeal as a leader and his courage during several colliery disasters.

Owing to the holiday season, Thorncliffe C.C. have had difficulty in raising a team for their Yorkshire Council match at Denaby on Tuesday, and to make up the side several of the West Indies cricketers who have been taking part in this week’s festival at Chapeltown, have consented to turn out.

Major C.R. Millen, head postmaster of Rotherham, has been notified that his eldest son, Lieut. C. J. Millen of the Indian Army, has been killed in action in Burma.  Lieut. Millen, who was 24, enlisted in February 1941, and went to India in March 1942, where he was commissioned at the Indian Military Academy.

 

Double Summer Time as been extended until September 17th.

The present Brains Trust has come to an end.  When resumed later in the year it is hoped that it will clash with the peace. – Punch.

The death is announced of the Fuehrer’s half-brother. It was felt in this country that the news could have been a great deal better.  -Punch.

South Yorkshire miners helping on Bedfordshire farms are much happier doing heavier work – hoeing or potato lifting – than pea-picking, it has been found.

An aeratone bath, the third in the Yorkshire coalfield for the treatment of rheumatism and kindred complaints, was opened at the South Kirkby Colliery last Saturday.

The Directors of the Manvers Main Collieries Ltd, recommend the payment of a dividend of 7 ½ per cent on the Ordinary Shares.  The dividend last year was 5 ½ per cent.

Sir Charles des Forges of Rotherham, will open the Swinton War Welfare Garden Fete at Swinton, on Monday afternoon at 2-30 when it  is hoped to raise £500 for Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen.

Coun. Isaac Burns to whom a presentation was made on Saturday, said he hoped to see a laundry added to pit-head baths so that miners pit clothes could be washed. Coun. Burns has served 43 years as pit delegate.

Over £90 was offered in prizes at a horse and cattle show held for the Red Cross on Saturday, as part of Stocksbridge Holidays-at-Home week, and at one period it was estimated that the value of animals in the judging ring together was about £2,000.

Miss Olwyn M. Lewis B.A. (Hons. Lond.) daughter of the Rev. E. Lewis, minister Wombwell Congregational Church and Mrs. Lewis, “Wentbridge”, Elsecar, has been appointed English Mistress at Doncaster Municipal High School for Girls.

Relatives of Yorkshire soldiers serving in India will attend a film show at the Rialto Cinema, York, to-night (Friday).  Arrangements have been made by the Army Welfare Committee, and each of the soldiers featured in the film has recorded a message which the relatives will hear.  This “Greetings Film” is a development of the Greetings Message which is broadcast periodically from India and heard in this country.  The home towns of soldiers featured in Friday’s film show include Rotherham, Doncaster, Mexborough, and Barnsley,
