Mentioned In Despatches

A Wath man, Sergt. George Whiteley (24), who is serving in Malta with the Royal Corps of Signals, has been mentioned in despatches.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Whiteley, of 88, Burman Road, Wath, received the news in a letter from him on Monday, which was written on October 14th after Sergt, Whiteley received the intimation from his Commanding Officer and was congratulated.

He says, “I cannot tell you what date it was or anything about it,” and asks them to send him details if it is mentioned in the newspapers. Sergt. Whiteley, who formerly worked at Wath Main Colliery, has been in Malta for three years. He went out as a despatch rider, but does not say what he is doing now.

Among those he has met while on the island is L.A/c. R. D. Ridyard, who, before joining the R.A.F. was Sports Editor of the South Yorkshire Times. Sergt, Whiteley is an Old Bramptonian.
