Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer – Wednesday 15 November 1916

Sad Tragedy at Wath-upon-Dearne.

At Wath-upon-Dearne on Tuesday, an inquest was held on Elisabeth Ann Thorpe (31), wife of Horace Thorpe, miner, of 129, Avenue Road, Wath, and on their infant son.

The bodies of mother and child were recovered from the canal on Sunday.

The husband slated that his wife gave birth to a boy on October 18th, and, taking a chill on November 8th, went back to bed.

On Sunday morning mother and child were missing from their room, and were later found in the canal. The jury found that Mrs. Thorpe had murdered her child and had committed suicide while of unsound mind.

They expressed sympathy with the widower.
