Labour Wins By-Election

In a 46% poll Labour candidate Mr Raymond Porter house, colliery fitter, 65, York Street, West Melton, and a 115 majority over Citizens Association candidate, Mr Douglas Labour, Stockwell Road, West Melton, in Saturday’s by-election in Wath Winterwell Ward to fill the casual vacancy caused by the death of Coun. T. Winkle, J.P.

Mr. Porthouse will sit until the Urban elections in April 1958—the remainder of the term of office due to have been served by the late Coun. Winkle.

Both candidates thanked each other for a clean fight and in thanking the Returning Officer and his staff, Mr. Porthouse spoke appreciatively of the speed with which the count had been completed.
