Market Charter.
Earl Fitzwilliam’s Gift to Wath Council.
The willingness of Earl Fitzwilliam to assist the welfare of the towns and villages around Wentworth has further manifestation his gift to the Wath Urban Council of the old Market Charter granted to the Lord of the Manor of Wath, by the ruling Sovereign in 1312, and the rights established, which have come down to Earl through the inter-marriage of the Earle of the Flemyings and the Saviles, and the subsequent acquisition of these estates by the Wentworths.
The Earl, when approached Mr. Frank Palfraymen behalf of the Wath Council, readily gave consent to the transfer of the market rights to the local authorities for the establishment of a municipal market and betterment of the township as a shopping centre.
The completion of the deeds of transfer is in the hands the Earl’s solicitors.
This is not the first time that Earl Fitzwilliam has helped Wath. On March 27th, 1920, his Lordship showed his appreciation of the work and aims of the Wath Mechanics’ Institute by giving that institution the land upon which it stands, in return for which members made the Earl an honorary life member of the Institute.
