These pictures were taken at Wath Athletic Club pavilion on Saturday at a dinner attended by some 100 employees of the Manvers Main coke ovens, brickworks and washery. The guests were Mr. L. R. Honeywill, secretary of the company, and Commander H. H. G. Begbie, manager of the welfare department.
The Loyal Toast was proposed by Mr. W. F. Carr, manager of the coke ovens and president of the club. Mr. Carr spoke on the success of the club during the past year in winning the “Max Woosnam” Cup and the “Hunter” Cup, both in inter-departmental competition.
The cricket secretary (Mr. Hy. Goddard then proposed the toast of “The Guests,’ and the vice-president of the club (Mr, Honeywill) replied with a short witty speech.
Mr. N. A. Ross (chairman of the club) made a short speech, and the sports cup was filled with champagne, the first drink being taken by the sports secretary, Mr. K. R. Woods, after which it was handed round.
Entertainment was given by employees, the main items being by Mr. Hy. Goddard, Mr. G. Beardsley. Mr. T. Smith. Mr. W. Green and Mr. W. Breeze. Mr. T. R. Harrop was master of ceremonies until the entertainment items were reached, when he handed over to Mr. E. Clarke, who took charge for the remainder of the evening.
