Distinction For Hull At Denaby.

Home Clubs’ Good Day.

Home clubs had a great time In the Midland League programme on Saturday, all the ten being successful except Denaby United, who were beaten 3 – 1 by Hull City Reserves.

Had Denaby’s forwards been good as the rest of the team they would have got a draw at least. Woodhead shone for Denaby, whilst Hull all round were very stylish. Green (A.) scored first for Denaby, Dixon, McDonald, and Marsh (H.) getting through for Hull.

Although Grantham are at the bottom of the table, they provided Scarborough, the league leaders, with a good match at Scarborough, the homo team winning 3—1. The latter had to break their record of an unchanged team since the beginning of the season, Bilcliff unexpectedly standing down owing to knee trouble. Scarborough showed superior football throughout the game, but Grantham put up a plucky opposition. Clayson, Nelson, and Keating scored for the winners, and Sullivan for Grantham.

Barnsley Holding On.

Barnsley Reserves were full value for their 2—1 victory over Nottingham Forest Reserves at Oakwell, thus maintaining second place. Their strong forward lino maintained heavy pressure, and better work at close quarters would have produced several goals. Ashton, the Forest goalkeeper, made many good saves. Curran excelled the second half, when he revealed clever methods, and Ashton was thrustful on the other wing. Batty was resourceful and cool defender, and Caddick was often prominent.

Pigg and Harvey scored for Barnsley, after Venters had registered a good goal for the visitors.

Mansfield Town played excellent football during the first half hour against Chesterfield Reserves, at Field Mill, and scored a couple goals Gray and Gibson netting, but just before the interval Parle reduced the deficit. Subsequently Chesterfield improved greatly, and were the better side during the last half hour, but could not equalise. Parle, Jobe, and Hunt were in fine fettle in the visitors attack. For the winners McLachlan, Gibson, and Murphy were best.

Staveley Town deserved to win by more than two goals one against Rotherham United Reserves, at Stavcley. Liddle opened the score for the visitors, and Eggleshaw equalised, after which the home team settled down and gave the Rotherham defence busy time. Smith, who played a sterling game at outside-right, put Staveley ahead with a neat touch. The second half was marred by a little ill feeling which entered the play. Both goalkeepers made fine saves.

Wombwell’s New Players Shine.

Wombwell achieved one of their best performances of the season in defeating Notts County Reserves 2—0 at Wombwell. Wombwell had two new players—Walsh, a centre forward from Roman Terrace, and Holmes, an outside-right from Ardsley, and they were the outstanding men in the game. Welsh had the distinction of scoring’ two goals. Wombwell were very quick on the ball and kept the Notts County defence extended. They also played more open game than their opponents. Shepherd and made powerful and enterprising left wing-. A Notts County player who attracted good deal of attention was their young centre-hair, Lawless, on trial from Cleethorpes.

In a fast, open game at Bradford, Bradford Res. defeated Lincoln City Res. By three goals to one. Dinedale, Cooke, and Dickinson scored for Bradford, and Kitching for Lincoln. Lincoln’s forwards were impotent in front of goal, after fine approach play. The visitors had more of the game territorially. Cooke and Geldard did beet for the winners, and Lincoln were served best Meeson, McConville, and Fisher.

An excellent game was seen at Loughborough, where the Corinthians beat Gainsborough Trinity 3 – 1. A feature was the splendid play of the Gainsborough defence. Conway was great in goal and saved many shots. Kell and Harris, at back, and Fell, at centre half-back, were outstanding. The Gainsborough forwards combined nicely, but did not finish too well. Scorers were: Higginbottom (penalty), Woolhonse, and Cook for Loughborough, and Shaw for Gainsborough.

Grimsby’s Glut of Goals.

Grimsby Reserves followed up their midweek win of 9—0 over Shirebrook by beating Doncaster Rovers Res. 5—1 at Grimsby. For the first half Doncaster gave better display than the home side, who, indeed, were lucky to leading 2 —l at the interval. However, Grimsby got into their stride after the interval, with the result that the Doncaster defence had a worrying time. The goal scorers were; Wattam (two), Moulson (two), and Bussingham (own goal) for Grimsby, and Harvey for Doncaster.

Boston beat Wath Athletic 6—1 at Boston. In the first half Halliday, for Boston, secured couple of clever goals from Dixon’s (F.) centres, and Rothery reduced the arrears. In the second half, play was livelier, and Dixon (W. H.), Waite, and Halliday (two) put Boston ahead. Wath’s periodical rushes were always a source of danger.
