West Melton Youths’ Prank

John Redfearn (19), haulage hand. Sunnygarth, Elsecar Road. West Melton, and John A. Ware (21), grocer’s assistant, of 7, High Street, Wath, were charged at Rotherham on Monday with having stolen a motor jack, pump. etc. the property of Lilian Hunter, at West Melton, on December 10th or 11th.

Prisoners pleaded guilty.

Lilian Hunter, 25, Granville Avenue, Scunthorpe, said that on December 10th she went to West Melton to visit some friends and left her car in a shed at the rear of a cottage. She had some tools in the car, and on December 11th these were missing. The brake was off, having also been tampered with.

P.c. Pearson said the youths at first denied all knowledge of the offence, but when he took them to the police station and charged them they each replied “It’s right.”

Redfearn and Ware had nothing to say except that they had been drinking wine.

They were fined £3 each including costs.
