26 Years on Two Councils
Retirement of Coun. J. Kelly
A well-known Mexborough Councillor and secretary of Wath Main N.U.M. branch, Coun. James Kelly (67), of 2, Oxford St., Mexborough, is to retire from local government next month, owing to “pressure of secretarial work for the N.U.M.”
He will have completed 26 years on Swinton and Mex-borough Urban Councils.
He gave 13 years’ service to Swinton U.D.C. until 1938 when Roman Terrace was transferred to Mexborough and he retained a seat on Mexborough Council. He was chairman of Swinton U.D.C. once and Mexborough twice.
He came to Mexborough as a boy and last year was presented with a chiming clock and a cheque in commemoration of 25 years unbroken service.
He has worked at Wath for many years and was president of the N.U.M. branch from 1921 until he became secretary in 1944.
Footnote — Mr Jack Schofield, a Manvers Colliery workman, has been nominated in his place by the Labour Party.
