Plucky Rescue At Brampton
Non-Swimmer Jumps into Deep Water.
A brave rescue was effected at Brampton Bierlow on Sunday. At about 3-30 -p.m. Martin Hart (picture) , a miner employed at the Cortonwood Colliery, of 39,Dearne Road, Brampton, was walking along the canal bank above the lock at Brampton, when he heard a splash behind him and looking round saw that a child had fallen into the canal.
Although unable to swim a stroke Hart jumped into the water fully clothed and reached the child after it had twice sunk and managed to draw it to the side but was unable to mount the bank because of the depth of the water, which is about 12 feet deep at this point. His cries for assistance attracted the attention of Edgar Bailey, butcher of 27, Rother Street, Brampton, who promptly pulled both out of the water and successfully applied artificial respiration to the child. It was afterwards discovered that the child was Peter Westhead, aged 3 ½, son of Henry Westhead unemployed, of 34, Rother Street Street, Brampton.
