Remarkable Escape

Jack Sorby ( 11) , son of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Sorby, of 10. Highfield Grove, West Melton, had one of his rare absences from school on Monday and it is not surprising that an enviable attendance record should have been broken. While on a visit to Bridlington on Saturday with a party of Sunday School scholars, Jack went for a walk on the cliff top, missed his footing and fell to the beach 120 feet below.

Coastguards, helped by holiday-makers, carried him a quarter of a mile along the foot of the cliffs to a waiting ambulance. However after detention at the Bridlington Hospital for:a few hours and after being X-rayed, he was allowed to leave and came home by train with the rest of the party.

Mrs. Sorby told a “Times” reporter that Jack came home by himself and mentioned quite casually to her that he had fallen down the cliff. He suffered slightly from shock and the muscles of his stomach were bruised, but Jack wanted to go to school straight away. He was.however, kept at home on Monday and Tuesday morning, but was allowed to go on Tuesday afternoon on condition that he took things quietly.

Jack attends the Brampton Ellis Junior School, for whom he plays both football and cricket; he is also a member of the School Wolf Cub pack.
