A Foolhardy Miner

John Redgate, miner, of Winterwell, was summoned for getting off the cage while in motion at Corton Wood Colliery on May 6th.

Mr Hickmott prosecuted, and stated that it was a foolhardy offence. It was a marvel that defendant was not smashed to pieces. The shaft was 220 feet long, and it took the cage thirty seconds to descend. The top of the cage was covered with iron.

Defendant stepped into the cage after the signs had been given, but fortunately for him, it did not strike him, or he would have been crushed between the side of the cage and smashed to atoms.

Defendant was fined 20s. and costs.
