Amazing Rout Of Hickleton
Club’s Lowest Score
In one of most extraordinary games in the history of local cricket Hickleton were humiliated on their own ground by Wath on Monday evening. They were all out for 7 runs and Wath won by nine wickets. Eleven wickets fell for 15 runs during the match. Hickleton have never been so cheaply dismissed before and enquiries among a number of old cricketers failed to bring to light any account of a similar collapse on the part of a local team of the class of Hickleton. Hickleton, who were without Alban Turner and Cyril Probert opened in disastrous fashion., Fawden, Cartledge and Riley being out with only three runs on the board. Worse was to follow however, for the next six wickets fell without addition to the score. Heal lashed out and hit a four but this completed the scoring, Greaves being clean bowled by Pearce before Heal got another chance. The Hickleton innings had lasted just half an hour and eight of their batsmen had failed to score, the seven runs being shared among Cartledge. Silverwood and Heal. The bowlers responsible for this amazing rout were Fred Pearce and George Feirn from who only nine overs and two balls were required. Their complete analysis were:
O M R W
Peace 4.2 2 2 6
Feirn 5 3 5 3
The odd wickets fell through a bad misunderstanding which resulted in Riley being run out.
The Wath innings opened in manner which suggested there were more thrills in prospect, Shaw being bowled by Hampshire without a run on the board. Cavill. however. joined Jewsbury and the pair took the score to 8 for one to give Wath an easy victory. The match lasted only 50 minutes including the few minutes interval between the innings. and only 14 overs were bowled.
