Tense Game as Denaby and Cadeby were beaten
Cortonwood 107 Denaby and Cadeby 103
In a very exciting and tense again, Cortonwood just managed to scrape home to the Yorkshire Council victory over Denaby and Cadeby at Brampton, scoring 107 in dismissing the visitors for 103.
The match was marked by spot on bowling and fielding by both sides.
Both sides had a struggle to get runs against formidable bowling by Denaby and Cadeby’s Dick Lawley, who finished with seven for 27 in 19 overs, and Cortonwood’s Geoff Biram, who had six for 53 in 18 overs.
Opener John Walters went for a single with the score standing at six, and although Cyril Taylor, who joined Brian Hunsley, went for eight Hunsley went on to some big hitting, his score of 31 included seven fours it of Lawley and Parker at one stage Collingwood stood at 74 48, then a good partnership of 33 by Meadows and Byron took the score to 107. For Denaby and Cadeby, Hough took two wickets 29 and Colin Parker one for 43.
Denaby and kb added just tough job on always through, until Colin Parker went on to score 39 and put them in with a chance. He went as a victim of Biram.
The visitors were at one time 84 eight, then David Hough and Weedon took the score to 103. Geoff Bynum had both caught by Stan Johnson, and last one Lawley was an out with a direct throw by Alan Pollard. There was always some life in the wicket, and that, combined with the skill of bowlers on both sides, made it difficult for the batsmen.

These two took the score to 90 – and well up with the clock – until four more wickets fell quickly – and Oughtibridge can only manage 134 for 8, despite a gallant attempt from Ernest Woodhouse who made 26 not out. Playing for the first success is that the season, stocks are All post a winning draw out of Wath at Bloomfield. It was also a repetitive story for the origin of the bulk of the runs, for these have come in the three games from J Gott, who joined the club this season from Oughtibridge.
He had 3 six hits in his 43 before being stumped by B. Walker, who put up really smart performances as the visitors keeper, being responsible for the dismissal by safe hands of three Old batsmen.
And a further indication of his ability was required, he only conceded a couple of byes.
Silverwood finished with three for 20 while Needham’s trio cost him 56 runs.
With the score 34 at the first wicket fall – collected in 42 minutes – P. Staves, left at the wicket by the departure of L. Peace (18), began to stick his toes in. When he was eventually dismissed at 65 44 his contribution over the space of 90 minutes had been a miserable 29 runs.
Having also caught be Lockwood, David Lockwood made it a hat-trick of catches when he snapped up D Richardson.
