Popular Manager leave Goldthorpe for Wath
After being in charge of the Goldthorpe branch of the National Provincial Bank for seven years Mr. Arthur Edmond Brookes will in the next few days take up a similar position at the Wath-on- Dearne branch.
Mr. Brookes has been a very popular figure in the town and has been treasurer of the Dearne Urban Council, the Dearne District Electricity Board, the Dearne District Operatic Society, the Goldthorpe and District Chamber of Trade, and the Hickleton Golf Club.
He was transferred from Sheffield to the Mexborough branch of the Bank in 1925 and he took charge of the Goldthorpe branch in 1931.
He and his wife have been living for the last three years at 83, Sandygate, Wath. Mr. Brookes is a member of a very old established Sheffield family, his father Mr. William Brookes, being the head of a large tool manufacturing business, and a magistrate. His great-grandfather was a personal friend of Charles Dickens.
The family still possess a first edition of the novel, “David Copperfield,” bearing on the frontispiece in Dickens handwriting—”Brookes of Sheffield.” Mr. Brookes is to be succeeded at Goldthorpe by Mr. J. N. Scott, of the Firvale, Sheffield, branch.this
