Bigamy at Wath

At the Leeds Assizes on Monday, John Markland, joiner, pleaded guilty to committing bigamy at Wath on the 10th November, 1884.

Mr. Harold Thomas, who prosecuted, sad the first marriage took place at Macclesfield in 1871, and in 1884, at Wath, the prisoner went through the form of marriage with Mary Ann Pressley. By her he had four children, of whom one was living

The prosecutrix said it was not till Good Friday last that she found out prisoner had a wife living. She wished to have no more to do with him, and she was willing to take charge of the child.

Prisoner stating that he was willing to be bound over. Mr. Justice Denman ordered him to enter into his recognisance, in £2O not to molest or communicate with the prosecutrix and sentenced him on that condition to 14 days imprisonment.
