Visits to School and Pit
At the Station.
By a happy coincidence the visit of the British Railway “Queen” to Wath last Friday took place on the eve of her fifteenth birthday, so that the civic welcome accorded per was in the nature of a birthday festival.
The “Queen,” Miss Marjorie Helena Goodall, daughter of Mr. G. Goodall, of Scunthorpe, arrived at the Wath L.N.E.R. station from Shrewsbury, where she had been attending an N.U.R. function the previous day, shortly after 4 p.m., accompanied by Mr. H. H. Neilson. secretary of the Railway Carnival Association, and was me by the Chairman of the Wath Urban Council, Mr. W. Popplewell, with members of the Council and other prominent citizens, in addition to a reception committee of members of the local branch of the N.U.R.
The “Queen” presented a charming picture in her white dress and green velvet cloak bound and trimmed with gold braid, her dark brown hair (not bobbed) held by a tiara of brilliants.
Six little attendants in white. Misses Kathleen Haywood, Phyllis Sickler, Winnie Harrison, Sylvia Loveday Kathleen Burgin and Vera Maddison, all daughters of Wath railwaymen, carried the “Queen’s” train, after she had been presented, by Miss Elsa Jayes, daughter of the local N.U.R. brooch secretary, with a bouquet of carnations.
The station was decorated with flags and bunting, and a crowd of two or three hundred saw the arrival.
In addition to Mr. W. Popplewell, others present at the reception were Mr. F. J. Trotter (District Superintendent, Doncaster). Mr. T. F. Day (District Goods Manager, Sheffield), Mr. H. Best (Stationmaster, Wath L M.S.) and Mrs. Best. Mr. W. Groves (Stationmaster, Wath L.N.E.R.). Mr. A. E. Beer (Yard Master, Wath), Mr. A. T. Thomson, Mr. A. J. Thompson, Mr. P. B. Nicholson. the Rev. L. E. Meredith, Mr A. Lalonde, Mr. A. G. Cauwood, Mr. W. Jewsbury, Mr. and Mrs. Mawson, Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Mr. and Mrs. D. Burgin, Mr. and Mrs. A. Crawford, Mrs. Maddison, Mr. Sickler, Mrs. Faith, Mr. T. Thompson. Mr. C. Salmon, Mr. Crossland, Mrs. Holmes, Mr. and Mrs. k. Javes, Mrs. F. Robinson, Mrs. A. Kaye, Mrs. R Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. J. Pascoe. Mr. T. W. Holmes, branch secretary, N.U.R. Orphan Fund, was responsible for the arrangements.
Following the reception the “Queen” went to the War Memorial, upon which she placed a wreath inscribed, “With fondest memory from the members of the N.U.R.,” and which was handed to her by Mr. J. Mattocks. Mr. Popplewell said the “Queen” wished him to say that whatever town she visited it was always her custom to visit the cenotaph He was sure they would all appreciate the spirit which prompted the action.
