Trip to Australia For Wath Teacher

31 years old Wath teacher, Miss Joyce Shaw, is beginning to establish a reputation for herself as a  gracious ambassadress in different parts of the world. This month she will escort a quartet of youngsters, two boys and two girls on a five and a half weeks tour of Australia.

Miss Shaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Shaw of 6, Quarry Hill, Road, Wath, was chosen after three interviews at Leeds, Wakefield and London, to accompany the children, who were selected from more than 5,000 other pupils in an essay competition sponsored by the Australian Government (Immigration Department). This competition, which called on children to describe an imaginary journey across Australia, was supervised by two British firms.

The children chosen to visit Australia are David Clark (16). Of Aberdeen; John Bailey (16), of Chester; Ann Wills (14), of London; and Shirley Godfrey (11), of Nottingham. Ann appeared on television on Sunday night when she told the interviewer that she had submitted a 320-page essay on Australia and had gathered her information from school library books and during a visit to Australia House,

German Visit

Miss Shaw is no stranger to overseas travel for she visited Germany three years ago at the invitation of the town of Heren, near Dortmund. Together with a school friend. She has also spent holidays in Greece and Italy. Educated at Wath Park Road Modern School and Wath Grammar school, Miss Shaw is a graduate of  Manchester University and has taught for the past three years at the Red Hill School.
