Council Cricket Cavalcade

Veteran Fred Produced Hat-Trick for Darfield

Darfield 41 for 1, Beighton 39

Darfield veteran medium paced bowler Fred Harris claimed a hat-trick of wickets to help his side along to a Yorkshire Council victory over Beighton at Darfield on Sunday. The visitors were dismissed for 39, and Darfield replied with 41 for one.

Harris is bowling particularly well this season. In this game he finished with a tally of four wickets for 17 runs. He was helped by George Hirst (4 for 10) and Dennis Batty (2 for 8) in seeing the opposition dismissed for the lowest “against-score” this season.

Top score for Beighton was 15. For Darfield Arthur Gibbs carried his bat for 22, and Ralph Wilks was eight not out. Opener Ian Randerson went early on.

Coal Aston 102 for 3  Darfield 101 for 6

The better team on the day, Coal Aston beat Darfield replying with 102 for 3 after Darfield had scored 101 for 6 in the allotted overs. Top scorers for Darfield were Ian Randerson 31 and Roger Swift 22. Four wickets fell to A McDermott at a cost of 39.

For Coal Aston, Havehand was 38 not out, and Creesty 39.

Fred Harris and Jack Ennis each claimed one Coal Aston wicket and the other was run out.

Against very tight Coal Aston bowling Darfield had no chance.

Frecheville    170 for 7  Cortonwood  93

In both bowling and batting. Cortonwood flattered to deceive in a Yorkshire Council game against Frecheville at Frecheville. After sending four Frecheville batsmen back for a score of 39,  they allowed the home side to  knock up 170 for 7, and then after batting well to stand at onestage at 84 for 4 Cortonwood were  all out for 93.

With the prospect not too bright, Frecheville’s G. Potts (45) and M. Frith (50 not out) made a stand. It should be said that having last use of the pitch, Cortonwood had the rough end of the stick, as on a churned-up wicket balls were flying all over the place. That was not the only reason for their defeat. however, as Cortonwood did not, play exceptionally well. They will perhaps go down as the most inconsistent side in the district this time.

Bowling for Cortonwood, Malcolm Wood claimed 4 for 52. Geoff Biram 2 for 60 and Philip Wrightson 1 for 20.

Opening for Cortonwood, Cyril Taylor batted well to score 47. G. Phelan claimed 5 for 46. B. Wastnidge 3 for 1 and W. Naylor 2 for 8.

Denaby & Cadeby  137 for 9  Maltby 60 for 6

Shiregreen were let down by an abject batting display, after their bowlers, in particular Jim Sorsby, had done a workmanlike job on the visitors, Denaby and Cadeby, dismissed for a paltry 67 on a wicket which could have held few terrors for the batsmen.

Sorsby soon made his presence felt, for after his partner, Roger Heath, had been punished for two fours in the opening spell, Jim dismissed both Denaby openers. Ellis and Dodds, in his second over. Dodds was clean-bowled, and Ellis went to a neat catch by Blower, then the Shiregreen bowler was unlucky to see Finnigan just fail to hold onto a difficult low slip-catch, from Oakley.

Jim went on to claim five wickets foi 22, with Heath bowling well to take 2 for 30, and slow bowler Frank Harrison weighing in with 2 for 13.

What should have been a mere formality for Shiregreen, who were just about at their strongest, turned into a procession to and from the pavilion, the home side being all out for 56, never looking like reaching their target.

For the winners, Parker took 4 for 25. Lawley 3 for 14, and Hough (D.) 3 for 13.

Denaby & Cadeby drew with Maltby at Denaby on Sunday in the Yorkshire Council. Scores were Denaby 137 for 9 dec. Maltby 60 for 6.

Principal individual scorer for Denaby were Parke 35, Oakley 39, Toseland 23, Ellis 19; and for Maltby were Jackson 24. D. Parker 15 and A. Green 15.

Best bowling performances for Maltby were by Wood 4 for 35, R. Green, 4 for 60 and for Denaby were by Parker 2 for 10. Lawley 3 for 29 and Cory 1 for 18.

With the Maltby score at 25 for 4. Denaby appeared to be in a good position for their second win of the weekend, but a heavy shower which stopped play for over an hour put paid to any chance they had left

The teams did eventually go back onto the field but there was only 35 minutes left for play, and a wet ball and soggy pitch made conditions very difficult for the Denaby bowlers.

Denaby beat Shiregreen by 11 runs at Shiregreen on Saturday in the Yorkshire Council. Scores were Denaby 67 all out. Shiregreen 56 all out.

Denaby gained their first win of the season with a fine win at Shiregreen. After being bowled out for 67. Denaby appeared to have little chance of victory, but fine bowling by Parker. D. Hough and Lawley. backed up by good fielding, saw them through to an 11 run win.

Principal individual scorers for Denaby were P. Elkins 14. D. Hough 15; and for Shiregreen Finnegan 11 not out and Jones 10

Best bowling performances for Shiregreen were by Sorsby 5 for 22; and for Denaby were by Parker 4 for 26, Lawley 3 for 14 and D. Hough 3 for 13.

Wath Athletic

Wall seemed as if they could hold on to draw, at the E.S.C. ground, Shiregreen, facing an E.S.C. total of 160 for 9, but their last four wickets fell for a mere 8 runs, the steelmen notching a well-earned win.
