Smashed Window At Rotherham West Riding Court on Monday, George Barker (46), miner, of
Barnsley Road, Wath, was fined 10s, for having been drunk and disorderly and 10s. for having done wilful damage to a window of Wath Police Station. He was also ordered to pay £5 damages. He was allowed to pay the fine at the rate of 5s. per week. P.c. Jackson said at about 10.40 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th, he was on duty in Wath Police Station in Barnsley Road, when he heard a crash and a whole brick and splinters of glass came flying into the room. He ran outside and saw the defendant, who was drunk and disorderly. He said, ” I am your prisoner,” and when taken into custody he added, ” I did it to relieve my feelings.” Supt. Kay said that the brick was thrown with such force that it smashed four panes of the window and carried away the woodwork. If the brick had hit anyone it would have done them serious injury. Defendant, in court, said he was very drunk and did not know’ what he was doing. Be had spent a lot of money on Mr. J. S. Colton Fox: How. much did drink. Defendant: About a sovereign. I shall you spend? be teetotal after this, sir. Supt. Kay Said Barker was fined 5s. for having been drunk and disorder, last Year. He believed 4 he had won £5 on a horse at the beginning of the week and had got through this in think during the week. This was his last night out Barker had a wife and five children. The police were very much surprised to find him in this position, as they knew him quite well. He lived across the road from police station in Barnsley Road. Supt. Kay added that he had kept Barker in custody over the week-end adding “I thought It would do him good to stay inside. I thought we had better take precautions until the beer had got out of him.” Mr. J. S. Colton Fox, announcing the magistrates derision Said they heard that Barker had a good character and they did not wish to send him to prison. They wanted him to get back to work. The police looked sympathetically upon the case, not withstanding the risk of in jury to someone when the window had been broken. They thought Barker would be punished Sufficiently if be paid the fine and damages
