Denaby 215 Wath 21 for 1
The cricket season ended as far as the Yorkshire Council team is concerned on Saturday, not in a blaze of glory, but in a day of suspense. Wath, who needed to win to obtain the championship of the South Yorkshire section, appear to have regarded the more lowly Denaby as “easy meat,” for when Tommy Hargreaves won the toss he put in the home team.
Bob Carlin made the only possible reply by letting Wath try to shift his men, a task which the easy wicket, coupled with a certain amount of over-anxietv on the part of the visitors, made too difficult to be performed in time for Wath to knock off the runs. Some chances were missed and perhaps the most unexpected slip was when Shaw, with the stumping gloves on ran to forward short leg in an endeavour to dispose of Reg Probert. It looked so dead easy that Probert commenced to run to the pavilion instead of to the other end. En route he turned and saw Shaw drop the ball. Probert dashed back and just got to his crease in time to avoid being run out.
A feature of the game was the Potts-Pearce combination which disposed of four successive men in the slips and nearly got a fifth when Potts got his hand to a chance from Springthorpe. He could not hold it, but tipped it into the hands of Ellis.
Denaby batted three hours it left Wath no time to knock off the runs, and there was no surprise when an appeal against the light, ten minutes after the resumption, was upheld. Incidentally the clock was in sympathy and stopped when the game did. After an interval of 40 minutes a further attempt was made, lint after another half-hour the light was again so bad that play had to end for the day.
And so Wath live to fight another day and perhaps it is poetic justice for Swinton, who appear to have thought that they had a good thing in Denaby, and were unable to pick up three easy points a week or two ago owing to the ground being unlit.
