Walter Hinchcliffe, of Tempest Avenue, Darfield, who recently joined Darfield Dramatic Club, played his first part with them in the society’s Festival production of the Bronte play “I Have Five Daughters.” Mr. Hinchcliffe, now Headmaster of Great Houghton Council School, has a long record of amateur theatre service. From 1933 to 1944 he was a member of Thurnscoe Amateur Dramatic Society – for eight years he was secretary of this group – but because he continually missed his ‘bus from Thurnscoe to Wath, where he then lived, he decided to try to promote a club at Wath.
He was one of the prime movers when Wath Theatre Club called their inaugural meeting. This was a great success and more than 70 people attended the gathering.
Actor-Chairman
When he moved to Holmfirth, Mr. Hinchliffe joined Holmfirth Amateur Dramatic Society and was appointed Chairman. His several performances in West Yorkshire included the madge judge in “Ten Little N…….” and Dr. Bragg in A. J. Cronin’s “Jupiter Laughs” which he had longed urged the society to perform. Before joining the Darfield club, Mr. Hinchliffe returned to the Thurnscoe Society and took part in their production last autumn of “The Paragon”.
Darfield are pleased to have this useful and reliable member in their society and hope to have the pleasure of seeing him in many other roles.
His favourite part? The cockney character with the motor-cycle in the Thurnscoe war time production of “Painted Sparrows.”
