Drunkenness Cases

James Wilson was charged with drunkenness on 4 March at Denaby and was fined 5s. and costs. Samuel Simpson was charged with a similar offence at Wath on the highway on the 24th ult. The defendant stated that he had not been on the highway but on his father’s property. He was fined 3s. and costs.

William Hides, John Smith, and Ezra Bellamy were charged with drunkenness on the highway at Swinton on the 25th ult. Police-constable Thornton stated that on the day named he heard a disturbance and found the defendants drunk. Bellamy and Smith were lying on the ground fighting. Hides denied that he was intoxicated. Sergeant Blanchard said that while on duty on the Wentworth Road he observed the defendants, who were very drunk and making a noise on the road. Bellamy stated that Hides was not drunk, and Smith confirmed this statement. Hides was dismissed, while Smith and Bellamy were each fined 3s.

Benjamin Platts was charged with drunkenness on the 27th ult. at Rawmarsh and fined 5s. and costs. Thomas Tingle, of West Melton, was fined 5s. and costs; Thomas Williams, West Melton, 5s. and costs; William White, West Melton, 5s. and costs; George Wood, Denaby Main, 3s. and costs; Elijah Earnshaw, Bolton, 3s. and costs; Thomas Jones, Bolton, 5s. and costs; Enoch Fisher, Kilnhurst, 5s. and costs; and John Prince, Kilnhurst, 10s. and costs, in all £1 4s. 6d. George Hartley, of Rawmarsh, was also charged with being drunk at Kilnhurst and fined 5s. and costs.
