Mexborough Miner Killed

A verdict of “Accidental Death ” was recorded by the Sheffield District Coroner (Mr. J. Kenyon Parker), at an inquest at Rotherham on Tuesday on Leonard Perry (51), miner, of 32, Frederick Street. Mexborough, who was killed by a fall of roof at Manvers Main Colliery early on Saturday morning.

John Bradley, colliery backer, of Burman Road, Wath, said he had been working with Perry at the scene of the accident for about an hour and a half when a deputy came and inspected the roof. He told them to set another prop, and Perry went to fetch one. He (Perry) was preparing to set the prop when the roof came in and he was buried.

William Clarke, deputy, of 1, Warren Vale Road, Wath, said he estimated that about 15 or 20 tons came down from the roof.
