Fatality at Wath Main

An inquest will be held at Mexborough today concerning the death of George Crossman (27), dataller, 28, Princess Street, West Melton, who died at the Montagu hospital from injuries sustained by a fall of side at the Wath Main colliery on Thursday

Mr F Allen held an inquest at the Montagu hospital, Mexborough, on George Crossman (Swinton), 38 Princess St, West Melton who was fatally injured in the Wath Main mine on Thursday.

Edward Guest, 16 York St, Mexborough, said he and the deceased were setting bars in the Parkgate seam when the accident happened.

Deceased was boring off a piece of side, when a small quantity of roof, including about two tubs of stone, felling, and knocked deceased against a prop, inflicting abdominal injuries from which he subsequently died.

A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.
