Mexboro’s Sudden Collapse

A sudden mid-innings collapse by Mexborough was largely responsible for their defeat in their home match with Eleecar on Saturday by 13 runs.

Elsecar scored slowly, the first 16 runs taking nine ovens. R. White (6) was run out with only eight runs scored, but two partnerships between R. Bamforth (20) and I. Baxter (16), and J. Norcliffe (38) and the Rev. J. Barnard (21), carried the score to 126 and the innings closed at 140.

R. White opened well for Mexborough, hitting 23 of the 32 scored before being dismissed by an excellent catch by J. Norcliffe off R White. T Hargreaves (16) was dismissed at 53 and A. Vickers livened up the game with a timely 52, which included seven fours and a six. With the score at 111 Kitchen and Holmes were sent back. C. Lawton and G. Howarth hit out desperately, but were separated when Lawton was caught. The keen Elsecar fielding also accounted for the last two wickets. For Elsecar, R. White took 6 for 51 and F. Bannister 2 for 27.

For Mexborough Hargreaves took 5 for 38.

Brampton’s First Win

Brampton gained their first win on Saturday. Featherstone being the victims. The success was largely due to the fine work of J. Wardle, who took five Featherstone wickets for 28 runs and scored not out, including nine tours and two sixes.

Featherstone scored 119 (J Bramley 25. J Lyman 31) . Brampton replied with 121 for 6, Wardle scoring more than half the total. G. Ullyott had 5 for 57 for Brampton.

 

Cory’s Timely Innings

Denaby & Cadeby  64 for 7  South Kirkby  165 for 7

A timely innings by Cory after Denaby had lost their first six wickets for 19 runs in reply to South Kirkby’s total of 166 for seven declared, enabled Denaby to force a draw at Tickhill Square.

A late start cut the playing time down considerably, and Denaby were left with only 90 minutes to bat. Had South Kirkby declared earlier they might have won the game. Their chief scorers were Town (67, Including ten fours), D. E. Fletcher (37). W. Truswell (24), Wildman (12) and Eades (10).

Denaby made a disastrous start, but Bateson and Cory added 25 runs for the seventh wicket before the former was dismissed. Corry carried on the good work and his undefeated innings of 22 saved the day. He was at the wicket for an hour. For Denaby, Holland took for 53 and Wathey 3 for 63. Truswell had 5 for 25 for South Kirkby.
