Bolton Man Holds Awards for 49 Years Service

Mr. Philip Bradshaw, of 29, Dearne Road, Bolton-on-Dearne, who was among recipients of ambulance awards presented by Mr. Ashcroft, Yard Master at Wath Marshalling Yard, at a dinner at Elsecar, now holds awards in respect of 49 years service to the Ambulance movement.

He joined the St. John Ambulance Association of the railway at Wath in 1910, and joined the S.J.A.B. in 1914.

From 1915 to 1919 he served with the R.A.M.C. in Malta and Salonika. In the ambulance movement, he received a gold medal for 15 years’ service and subsequently gained six bars each in- respect of five years’ service.

In 1937, he joined the Railway A.R.P. organisation, and was at a first aid post throughout the war. In 1941, he became Divisional Superintendent; and in 1950 was appointed a Serving Brother of the Order.

Born in Mexborough in 1891, he attended the Dolcliffe Road and National Schools. He worked first as an errand boy and then at Manvers Colliery until joining the railway in 1906. He retired as a foreman shunter in 1956.
