Football Flashback to the 1900’s
Many readers will be interested in these photographs.
The top photograph shows Thurnscoe East Prims. in season 1909-10, when they were runners-up in the Mexborough Sunday School League and the lower Wath Athletic Res. 1899-1900, South YorkFlare League Champions.
The Thurnscoe photograph was “unearthed by Mr. Torn Gregory from a cupboard at his home where it had lain for a number of years.
Mr. Gregory’s father, Mr. Torn Gregory, was trainer of the team.
Members of the team are: Back row (left to right),J. Bennett, F. Marples, G. Jones, C. Jackson (who had trials with Barnsley) and W. Bates; middle row: T. Gregory (trainer), A. Gilfillan, R. Lilley, G. Bladen and J. Clark; front row, W. Hadley, W. Ball, W. Roper, W. Jackson, J. Goldthorpe and T. Hayes.
The Wath team was (back: H. Bradley, J. Mansbridge, F. Hawcroft, S. Longworth; (centre), O. Jackson, secretary, F. Law, treasurer, G. H. Roe, A. Law, E. Race. W. Davis; (front), T. Holdsworth, W. Ellis, H. Hartley, A. Bamforth, H. Winstanley, and W. Moore.
The photograph, which bears the inscription “Farthing,” was kindly loaned to us by Mr. H. Winstanley, of Norton Road, Wath.
