Mr F.L. Beevers
Former Wath Councillor
Mr Frederick Law Beevers, of 28 Burman Rd, Wath, a member of Wath Urban Council for 17 years before he retired last year, died at his home after a short illness on Wednesday morning. He was 70.
Born at Blacker Hill, Mr Beevers came to West Melton as a boy and left school at 10 years of age to help keep his widowed mother.
He started work at Wath Main Colliery as a pump boy and worked his way up to the position of underground superintendent of haulage, working underground for 55 years.
An independent member and twice chairman of the Council, he was also twice chairman of the Dearne District Electricity Board.
Mr Beevers was chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee and it was largely due to his efforts that Wath obtained a new fire engine.
He was also Chairman of the Baths Committee.
A founder member of Wath Amateur Operatic Society, he took part in many of the Society’s production. Singing was his main hobby and he had a fine baritone voice. Mr Beevers sang at many concerts for local charities.
