Four Generations

Wath and Wombwell Connections

Our photograph shows four generations of a family well known in the Dearne Valley.

The great-grandmother seated in front is Mrs. Mary Eliza Ward, who is 74 years of age. Before the death of her husband two years ago she had been in business for many years as a greengrocer in Alma Street, Wombwell, but the business has now been taken over by  a son and she is living with her only daughter, Mrs. E. Vaughan, at 68, Oak Road. Wath.

Mr. Fred Vaughan, her son-in-law is a conspicuous figure in Wath and, although he lost a leg in an accident at Manvers Main 27 years ago, he is still working at the colliery as an engine driver.

The grand-daughter is Mrs Sutcliffe, who left the Wath district on her marriage 7 years ago and now lives at Wakefield. Her 18 months old daughter, Margaret, is sitting on Mrs. Ward’s knee.
