Gallant Rescue.

Child Saved from Canal at Wath.

At 11-40 on Saturday morning Donald Galloway, aged five and a half, son of Police-Sergt . Galloway of 93, Barnsley Road, Wath-on-Dearne, was sailing a toy boat on the canal, near to the bridge in Whetmore Lane, when he fell into the water, which at this point is about eight feet deep.

George Henry Wood (39) (picture), of 23, Rother Street, Brampton Bierlow, was passing at the time, and saw what he at first thought to be a dog in the water. He found that it was a boy, and tried to reach the boy with his coat. He could not do this, and jumped into the water, though a poor swimmer. When he reached the side the bank was slimy, and he could Lot get the boy out.

At this moment Dennis Butterfield, an ambulance man, of 43. Norton Road, Wath, was passing, and pulled them both out of the water. He used artificial respiration with success.

The boy’s mother came on the scene and asked Mr. Wood for his name, but he would not give it either to her or to Mr, Butterfield. The boy’s father had to make many enquiries before he could ascertain the name of the rescuer. Mr. Wood, who is a miner employed at Cortonwood Colliery has been on compensation for a month owing to an injury to his elbow.
