Golden Wedding – Mr & Mrs Thickett

On September 2nd, 1894, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thickett were married at Wath Parish Church and on Saturday, on their Golden wedding Anniversary, they were the honoured guests at a reception at St. Helen’s Church Schoolroom.

They have been connected with St. Helen’s Church for many years and many church members joined relatives in extending good wishes. Mr. J. Bevin, of Goldthorpe and Mrs. A. Walker, of Elsecar, who attended the wedding 50 years ago as best man and bridesmaid, were both able to be present at the gathering.

Mr. Bevin who is now the Provincial Grand Primo of the Don Valley R.A.O.B. Province, proposed the congratulatory toast. Several relatives, because of illness and travelling difficulties were unable to be present, but their sons, Herbert, Harry, Wilfred, George, Reggie and Percy and their daughters, Mrs. Ada Braun, Platts Common and Mrs. Elizaeth Brammah, Birdwell, were able to join in the festivities.

Mrs. Thickett cut the wedding cake which was enjoyed, following an excellent meal.  Mrs. Walker supported Mr. Bevin in his complimentary speech and assured the couple of widespread regard.  This was suitably acknowledged by Mr. and Mrs. Thickett.

In addition to his work as a stonemason, Mr. Thickett carried on a business, retiring a few years ago, when he went to reside at his present home at 66, Royston Hill Bungalows.
