Religious Activities

Religious activities have also increased by the erection of St James’s Church, Nonconformist churches at Gore Hill and West Melton, and the old Wesleyan Chapel, with its Sunday school room underneath, has been superseded by the handsome Trinity Church adjoining, the old building being used as a Sunday school.

The Rev Henry Partington was Vicar at the Parish Church and held the living for the lengthy period of 64 years. He preached and took the Communion service on March 5, 1893, the 60th anniversary of his incumbency.

The Rev Joseph Boyd was the Pastor at the Congregational cChurch, West Melton and the Rev John Cheeseman was the vicar of Christ Church, Brampton Bierlow.

The little chapel at Newhill was then in existence, as was also the Ebenezer Chapel in Church Lane.

For some time the Primitive Methodists held their gatherings in the club room at the Star Inn, but later built premises in West St, Wath.

The Catholic Church was opened on first of May 1879, Rev C G Locke being its first priest. Father Locke was a relative of Mr Locke of engineering fame, who presented Locke Park to Barnsley.
