Wath hockey player chosen for England

Honour for G.A. Baylis

G. A. (“Tony”) Baylis, only son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Baylis, Birdsholme, Wath-on-Dearne, who was selected for the first English trial last year, but who had, unfortunately, to stand down through an injured hand, has this year achieved the distinction of an International Cap through his selection in the England side to meet Scotland at Paisley to-morrow (Saturday). Baylis is the first Yorkshireman to gain an England Cap since the retirement of K. G. Chilman, who was England’s outside left for so long. Altogether, Chilman made 22 appearances for his country.

Baylis got his chance to play for Yorkshire in 1935-36. At the beginning of this season he suffered a slight loss of form, but he has staged a splendid and welcome revival, and earlier in the season he played for the Hockey Association XL It has been said of him by a contemporary, “If he is self determined enough, he can make the left wing position in the England side his own”. He has an exceptional turn of speed and can centre with power and accuracy.

Happy Coincidence.

There is a particularly happy and interesting coincidence in this selection. Baylis learned his hockey during school days at Felsted (Essex) where he gained his Blue in 1933, 4 and 5. C. N. Wyatt (South) who is selected for England at right back, was captain of the Felsted side in Baylis’s first year with the side. Baylis pays warm tribute to the prompting and support he has so often received from inside Yorkshire partner and colleague, Dr. L. Utting (Sheffield).

There are four new Internationals in to-morrow’s England side. As compared with last year’s side, there are live changes, three in the forward line. Baylis is one of three North players to be honoured.
