South Yorkshire Times June 14, 1947
John Wardle, the former Wath Grammar School boy. who a season or two ago took over 100 wickets in Yorkshire Council cricket, made his first appearance this season with the County side against Somerset and distinguished his return with an analysis of 5 for 41.
This 24-year-old left arm spin bowler who now plays for Eccleshill in the Bradford League, had three spells, and it was in the third that the wickets were taken. In each case the stumps were hit and his analysis for that period was 10.1 overs, 5 maidens, 18 runs, 5 wickets—excellent performance!
Wardle is also a good bat. His all-round usefulness has more than justified Yorkshire’s continued interest in his development.
