Long Service Medallist

Mrs Evelyn Ashley, 16, Ash Road, Wath, is the first person in Wath to be awarded the Long Service Medal for nursing.

She was a nursing sister of the St John Ambulance Brigade before the Wath division was formed.

Mrs Ashley entered the nursing service during the 1914-18 , war, when she was nursing at St. Luke’s Military Hospital, Bradford.

She joined the SJAB class at Wath and gained awards in this work over 20 years ago. For years she has been an Instructor of Wath Ambulance class, sharing the distinction with the Ambulance Officer, Mr. J. W. Poole.

In the last war, Mrs. Ashley was an Instructor in ARP and First Aid work at Wath, and has assisted at Mexborough Montagu Hospital. She still carries on, despite being a grandmother.

Her husband, Mr. Frederick Ashley, who is employed on the railway, also knows something of ambulance work, and is a Wath ambulance man, he gained a medal in the last war for SJAB work.
