Rain tried hard Jesse to defeat the highly efficient organisation of the first annual sports and Gala promoted by the members Main Colliery Company, which were held on the Bolton Welfare Ground, though it did not interfere with the successful conclusion of the programme.

Organised by the company for all employees and pensioners, the day had long been look forward to, and when the programs were issued it was revealed that there were as many as 1,350 competitors.

Nearly 10,000 employees and pensioners, their wives, children and friends were present, and special trains were run from Swinton. The enthusiasm of the spectators was unbounded, and the crowd around the ground presented a refreshing spectacle.
