Many Records Set Up

The chairman of the North-Eastern Coal Board, Major-General Sir Noel G. Holmes, yesterday congratulated Yorkshire miners on their output effort last week. It is estimated that with Saturday working the miners produced a total of 1,020,000 tons. It was only the second time the 1,000,000-ton figure had been topped since the pits were nationalised. Sir Noel’s message to the men read: On behalf of the Divisional Board I would like to congratulate the trade unions and their members on the excellent turn-up on Saturday, and the managements on the arrangements made such short notice to have the pits open for work. As a result the North-Eastern Division obtained more than 1,000,000 tons raised and weighed last week- I do hope and trust this spirit of co-operation will remain throughout the winter months.”

The county’s highest output of the year brought a crop of record breaking achievements.

At Denaby, Cadeby and Manvers Main collieries, near Mexborough, record pit tonnages were created, while the Haigh Moor seam, heavily mechanised in a scheme started under private enterprise in 1946, set up similar records.

In the Doncaster area, where only one pit failed to reach its goal, the target-beating flag is being flown for the 25th time this year. An additional 13,207 tons were raised in the area.

Tonnages were:— Worksop, 141,531; Doncaster, 196,283 Rotherham, 150,174; Carlton. 123,125,  South Barnsley 92,535; North Barnsley. 94,450
