During the summer about 350 cadets from the 7th York and Lancaster T.A. regiment at Mexborough have been taken to camp, mainly during week-ends.
The Rev. F. Gouge has been appointed chaplain to Hallamshire Maternity Home. Chapeltown, the Rev H. W. Quarrell to Wath Wood Hospital and Bishop G. V. Gerard to Rosehill Hospital Annexe.
Dr. C. E. Whiting, Vicar of Hickleton, has written a booklet, “The Story of the Church and Parish of St. Michael and All Angels, Old Brodsworth.” The booklet contains eight photographs of the mediaeval buildings and their contents.
The Rev. H. W. Salford. Rotherham, the Rev. T. Kidd. Mexborough and the Rev. H. Trodden, Denaby, will be ordained Priests at Sheffield Cathedral on Sunday.
Yorkshire miners are anxious that there should be no delay in the plan to instal electricity in all miners’ houses, owned by the North-Eastern Divisional Coal Board.
August, 1951, has been the wettest in the Sheffield area for 20 years and in the Leeds area for 24 years. Rainfall in the Sheffield area was 5.24 ins. compared with 5.72 ins. in 1931 and rainfall in Leeds was over 3.4 ins.
Mr. Richard Dunn, of Lowfleld House , High Street, Conisbrough, who died on Febraury 12th intestate, aged 46. left £4,099 gross, £3.304 net.
The annual camp fire held by Don and Dearne Scouts will be held in Mexborough this year – on the cabbage patch” adjacent to Mexborough Athletic Ground on September 22nd at 7 p.m. Leaders will be S.M. Stan Russell and C.M. Joe Glover, of Thurnscoe
Young men born between August 1st. 1933, and September 30th, 1933, both dates inclusive, are required to register under the National Service Acts on Saturday, September 8th, 1951. They should attend for registration at Local Offices of the Ministry of Labour and National Service, taking with them their National Registration Identity Cards.
Retirement pensioners, men aged 70 and over and women 65 and over, are due to get a pension increase this week. The Ministry of National Insurance remind those pensioners who have not yet had their 26s. and 16s. pension books uprated that they should take them to the nearest local office of the Ministry without delay so that they may get their 4s. increase.
The Rev. E. B. A. Somerset, a former Vicar of Mexborough, will preach at Evensong at Mexborough Parish Church on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Somerset, now living in retirement near Poole in Dorset, are at present spending a holiday with the Rev. G. H. Bedford, Rector of Sprotborough, and Mrs. Bedford. Mr. Bedford was curate at Mex-borough during Mr. Somerset’s incumbency there.
Mr. Tom Williamson, General Secretary of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, says in an article in the September issue of the union’s journal that the fuel outlook for the coming winter is more serious than that of 1947.
Police Constable Cyril Stirk, who has been stationed at Stainforth for five years, has been promoted to Sergeant at Ripponden. He was at one time at Denaby.
New altar rails are to be installed in the Lady Chapel of Denaby Parish Church in memory of the late Mr. T. Peters of Denaby. They will be placed in the Chapel and dedicated with the new Altar Frontal before the end of the year.
