Mr. Frederick Allen, the well-known BBC newsreader and announcer has promised to attend the Montagu Hospital “Dig for Victory” show at Mexborough in August which is to be opened by Mr. George Baker O.B.E.
Jimmy Wilde, famous ex-flyweight boxing champion of the world, is to speak at the Barnburgh Main Colliery canteen this Friday afternoon in support of the Dearne District Salute the Soldier week which starts this weekend. He will bring his Lonsdale Championship belt with him.

Sir George Reresby Sitwell, 4th Bart., of Montegnfoni, Montagnana, Val di Pesa, Florence, Italy, formerly of Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire, who died in Switzerland last July, left estate in England worth £12,271/9/11 gross, with net personality £11,900/5/10.
Opencast coal sites which have been opened up have proved worthwhile in 90 per cent of cases says the Select Committee on National Expenditure in a report issued this week. From December 1st, 1942, when development of opencast coal production started, to the end of April this year, 6,440,000 tons were produced.
Major J. E. Brooke Smith, of Burlington Cottage, Wath, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Smith, of West Melton, who was seriously wounded while serving in Italy, in May, is now at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield and is making favourable progress. He arrived in England a few days ago and was first taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary.
