Lieut. G. A. Baylis, MC., of Wath, who was last week reported missing in the Middle East, has now been notified by the Red Cross as a prisoner of war.
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club had a net loss for the year ending May 7th of £769 18s. 6d., which includes depreciation of 1430 14s. 1d. and War Damage Contribution of 168 0s. 6d.
Mexborough Secondary School Leavers’ Service, which was to have been held on July 16th, has been postponed until July 20th. The service will be at the Parish Church at 10.30 a.m. and the preacher will be the Bishop of Sheffield (Dr. L. S. Hunter).
District Rose Day collections for Mexborough Montagu Hospital total £189 10s. 9d., £30 more than last year and include: Mexborough £66 16s. 6d., Swinton £22 15s. 3d., Kilnhurst £12 4s. 6d., Thurnscoe £19 4s., Goldthorpe £8 18s. 6d., Bolton £7 6s.. Barnburgh £2 6s., and Wath £80.
The annual meeting of the Yorkshire South Eastern) branch of the Association of Mining, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was held last Saturday at Worsborough Hall by courtesy of Mr. J. E. Long-den, and the directors of Barrow Barnsley Collieries. The members, most of whom were accompanied by their wives, spent a happy time in the hall and gardens after the meeting.
Experiments made by Lord Horder, the King’s Physician, in regard to pithead meals for miners, will result in revolutionary changes and pithead canteens are now to supply meals on the lines indicated by Lord Horder. In addition to the allowance of half-an-ounce of fats per meal at the pithead canteens, three-quarters of an ounce of dripping will be provided in every “packed ” meal supplied. It is understood canteens will also be able to reduce their meat allocation by 23 per cent. and take sugar and preserves instead.
