Saturday, September 26th, has been fixed as the day for the exchange of plaques in commemoration of the success of Wombwell’s Warship Week.
A Denaby soldier, Gunner Percy Jepson, has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry In the Middle East. He is at present in hospital, being wounded in the engagement in which he gained the award.
Mr. A. E. Lloyd, B.A., of Wood Walk, Wombwell, a member of the staff of St. Mary’s School, Barnsley, and a lay reader at Wombwell Parish Church, has been appointed headmaster of St. Michael’s Junior Boys’ School, Wakefield .
At the end of July more than one-quarter of the total amount subscribed to the Red Cross Penny-a-Week Fund came from the six northern countries, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland. Figures issued by the Penny-a-Week Fund show that the total raised by the residents of these counties was £848,571, while the total for the whole country was £3,000,000. Lancashire topped the list with £328,833, while Yorkshire was a close runner-up with £228,689.
A runner bean 18 ¾ inches long has been exhibited in Wombwell this week.
Fifty-three members of the staff of the “South Yorkshire Times” Printing Co., Ltd., are now serving in H.M. Forces.
Mr. J. M. Brown, of Barnsley, has taken up duties at the Midland Bank, Mexborough, in succession to the late Mr. W. W. H. Hartley.
Archie Miller, a former member of the choir of Wombwell Parish Church, is now a member of the choir at a church In West Africa, where he is serving in the R.A.F.
Sunday, September 13th, is to be ” Gift Day ” at Wombwell Parish Church. In the parish magazine, Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney writes, “It is absolutely necessary it shall be a success if the finances of our church are to be kept on the right side.”
Mr. J. G. Mar, Resident Surgical Officer at the Montagu Hospital, wishes to express sincerest thanks to the medical practitioners of the district for their kind help and co-operation in the work of the hospital during his term of office. He is shortly leaving to join the staff of the Medical School at the University of Edinburgh. Mr. James Wilson, formerly of Grimsby Hospital, has arrived to succeed him this week.
