Message From His Worship
The kindness and hospitality of Wath people has this week promoted an American Mayor to write a letter of thanks to the town-
Jan Hull, of Mundelein, U.S.A., has been staying in Wath for nearly a year and has been attending Wath Grammar School.
She has written several letters to her home town relating tales of her stay in Wath and now Mr. Richard Foss, Mayor of Mundelein, has written to “all the wonderful folk who claim as home the town of Wath-upon-Dearne.”
The letter goes on to say, “Jan has described you as a town filled with lovely people and interesting shops.” The Mayor describes Mundelein as being very similar to Wath.
Jan came to Wath on an exchange visit in August and has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. John Earnshaw, of 2, Woodside Avenue, Wath. She returns to America on Monday.
‘A’ Levels
She has been a Sixth Form Student at the Grammar School, along with the Earnshaws’ 16-years-old daughter, and now she is eagerly awaiting the result of her “A” level History exam.
Jan says she has felt welcome wherever she has gone. She has felt truly one of the family at the Earnshaws’ home.
She added, “The exchange visit is organised to help the people of America and other countries to understand each other. Basically the exchange is to help extend friendship between the two countries.”
During her visit she has spent time giving lectures and talks about America to various guilds etc. She spent a short time in Sussex, but did not think the South was such a friendly place as the North.
Folk Singer
Jan has been a member of Wath’s ‘Millen Folk Group.
Mrs. Doris Earnshaw said, “I think Jan has done more for the people of Wath than they do for themselves.”
Jan hopes to return to England in the future, but first she has a four years’ course at Illinois State University.
Pat Earnshaw is hoping to travel to America to visit Jan in the future.
