Mexboro’ Area Floods
Wettest Fortnight for Ten Years
This picture gives some idea of the extent of the recent flooding. This flooded road is that between High Melton and Mexborough
In the Mexborough area the fortnight ending on Wednesday was the wettest for 10 years.
The fortnight’s rainfall may be a record for the area. Readings taken at Mexborough show that 2.83 Inches of rain fell in the fortnight. Worst days were Friday and Saturday. On Friday .68 inches of rain fell on Saturday .62.
Hundreds of acres of land are still under water In the area and roads have been flooded.
The ferry linking Mexboro, and Old Denaby resumed service yesterday afternoon after being out of action since Saturday
Near Danger Mark
The highest point reached by the River Don at Mexborough was Tuesday when the level the water was only 6 inches below danger point and was six feet above its normal level.
Yesterday the water was only 2 feet above normal. Although the ferry was operating yesterday afternoon Old Denaby people were hampered by water on the pathway leading from Old Denaby to the riverside.
The old ferry boat, replaced a fortnight ago, was taken down the river on the first stage of his journey to Thorne to be reconditioned but the water level in Denaby proved too high for the boat to be taken under the bridge, however and yesterday the boat was still moored on the Mexborough side.
The Mexborough High Melton Road has been impassable at Denaby Halt for nearly a week, and many acres of pasture land are flooded in the area.
Flooding in Station Road, Wath, caused buses operating on the Wath – Bolton route to make a detour via Manvers Main. About 50 yards of Station Road was under water, but yesterday the Road was almost free of water.
Workmen had to be on duty on Friday and Saturday in Swinton Road. The road was slightly flooded but traffic was scarcely impeded.
Following a discussion on probable further flooding in the Burcroft Area at Conisbrough. Conisbrough Urban Council General Purposes Committee, recommended that the clerk (Mr. R. W. Birch) write to the Ministry of Health for an expression of opinion and guidance as to what action could be taken to relieve distress to householders compelled to evacuate their houses through flooding.
